Call for Applications
Winter School on Artificial Intelligence and Innovation
(AI&I 2018)

Co-located with IEEE ICSC2018 and IRC2018
01/28/2018 - 02/03/2018
Hills Hotel, Laguna Hills, Calilfornia
Registration deadline: 12/15/2017

Goals

It is generally accepted that Artificial Intelligence will be the most important technology in the near future that may impact almost every part of our society and life.

Artificial Intelligence is the ability of a computing machine to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings. The term is frequently applied to the project of developing systems endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason, discover meaning, generalize, or learn from past experience. Since the development of the digital computer in the 1940s, it has been demonstrated that computers can be programmed to carry out very complex tasks - as, for example, discovering proofs for mathematical theorems or playing chess - with great proficiency.

Still, despite continuing advances in computer processing speed and memory capacity, there are yet no programs that can match human flexibility over wider domains or in tasks requiring much everyday knowledge. On the other hand, some programs have attained the performance levels of human experts and professionals in performing certain specific tasks in applications as diverse as medical diagnosis, computer search engines, voice or handwriting recognition, etc.

Thus, the aim of this school is to provide students with a complete overview of the knowledge related to Artificial Intelligence and Innovation. The school is organized as a set of theoretical lectures followed by hands-on sessions. A set of evening talks by renown researchers in the winter school will complement the main school activities by exposing students to the latest results in the field.

Topics

This winter school will cover the following topics:

  • Classic and modern artificial intelligence

  • Data structures, algorithms, and data science

  • Semantic computing

  • Robotic intelligence

  • Virtual reality

  • Applications in sciences, medicine, humanity, business, agriculture, etc.

Location and Dates

The school will be co-located with the 12th IEEE International Conference of Semantic Computing (ICSC, http://www.ieee-icsc.org) and the 2nd IEEE International Conference of Robotic Computing ((IRC, http://www.ieee-irc.org) at the Hills Hotel (Laguna Hills, California).

Schedule

The school begins in the morning of Sunday, January 28, 2018 (participants are expected to arrive Saturday, January 27), and finishes in the morning of Saturday, February 3rd.

Application

The school is open to college and graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers. Perspective participants should email their name, affiliation, and CV to: icsc@uci.edu no later than:

December 15th, 2017

Applications will be acknowledged within three business days, and notification of acceptance will be made on December 20th, 2017.

Please note that the number of hotel rooms available is extremely limited and granted on a first come, first serve basis so we recommend that students register as early as possible.
